About Sen Ze

Author Of The Intelligent Lawyer

Founder Of The Intelligent Lawyer Inner Circle

Sen Ze qualified as a Barrister-at-Law (Lincoln's Inn, UK) when he was called to the English Bar in 1990. He started practicing law in 1992.

At the end of his first, second and third years as a junior legal associate, his salary would increase by 30% more than his previous year's amount — every single year. This was already 5 - 6 times more than what his peers would get. In addition, his firm also offered him a profit-sharing arrangement at the end of only his third year which then led to a partnership.

He was doing something right, right from the beginning. He started documenting the strategies he and his network of legal professionals used over the years, because he didn't want to forget them as they are many he could use. He also started multiple non-law businesses along the way which provided even more powerful growth strategies for law firms that most firm partners or owners are not implementing.

After 35 years, he's revealing all the strategies he and his network of legal professionals know and have implemented, in The Intelligent Lawyer. This one-of-a-kind book for practising lawyers provides all the necessary components to enable them to earn much more in their careers without burning out and grow their careers/firms much quicker using strategies few lawyers even know about. There's nothing else like it.

Sen Ze Speaks

Alongside his legal practice, Sen Ze has also started and operated multiple businesses of his own. This gives him perspectives that many lawyers are never exposed to.

He understands how businesses attract customers, position themselves in competitive markets, build trust, improve operations, use systems and create leverage through technology and clever strategies.

He frequently speaks at entrepreneurs’ conventions, where he shares practical ideas to help business owners grow more effectively with less wasted effort.

Sen Ze also has a deep interest in using technology for extreme leverage. He applies technology across his businesses, including his law firm, to improve efficiency, reduce repeated work, strengthen client experience and multiply output without simply adding more hours.

He brings all of these experiences into The Intelligent Lawyer Inner Circle for lawyers to learn non-traditional strategies that many law firms still do not use.

Lawyers and law firms can benefit greatly from ideas outside the legal profession. Many lawyers and firms still compete in the traditional way by relying mainly on reputation, referrals and long working hours.

They still matter, but modern firms also need stronger positioning, better systems, clearer communication, smarter use of technology and a more commercial understanding of how clients think and choose lawyers.

Lawyers must attract trust, operate efficiently, manage people well, create value and stand out in a crowded market.

Lawyers who understand both legal practice and business strategy place themselves in a much stronger position to grow their careers, build stronger firms and create more opportunities.

Sen Ze Drives Blindfolded

On 24th January 1999, Sen Ze (as magician "Shaun Tan") drove double blindfolded on the streets of Kuala Lumpur for a distance of 5km to help raise funds for The National Council For The Blind.

Fittingly, he started at Merdeka Square next to the former High Court buildings. He ended his journey at the iconic KLCC Twin Towers. This event was picked up by all national media and international media CNN and broadcasted to an audience of millions worldwide.

The huge success of this event was the result of Sen Ze and his team getting the necessary police permits and the cooperation of over 20 police officers and 4 police outriders to accompany his vehicle on the journey.

Some of the lessons in this event include influence, working with the authorities, risk management, public trust, stakeholder coordination, media positioning and disciplined execution.

The event was spectacular to the public, but behind the spectacle was a serious process. Permits had to be obtained, police cooperation had to be secured, safety had to be planned, the media had to understand the story and every participant had to trust the person leading the event.

Lawyers can learn a great deal from this. A successful lawyer does not depend only on technical ability. He must know how to win trust before asking for support, work with regulators, clients, partners, referrers, staff and institutions.

He must also manage risk and communicate it clearly enough for all stakeholders to feel safe.

Most importantly, he must understand that major results are rarely accidental. They are designed through preparation, credibility, relationships and intelligent execution.
